Oldest Nyonya Restaurant in Town

Celebrating the marriage of Chinese, Malaysian and Indonesian cuisine at Straits Chinese Nyonya Restaurant

June 17, 2020

Nyonya or Peranakan cuisine arose through an amalgamation of Chinese cooking ingredients, such as pork and kiam chye (pickled vegetable) and Malay spices like belacan (dried fermented shrimp paste). These Nyonya delicacies were culminated by the Peranakans - the descendants of early Chinese migrants from the South who had set their footing in Peninsular Malaysia, Indonesian archipelago and Singapore back in the 15th to 17th century. Bringing to table a tantalising blend of aromas, spice, herbs and tang.

Managed by the Guan Hoe Soon Group, Straits Chinese Nyonya Restaurant remains the oldest Nyonya Restaurant in Singapore with over 65 years of history. Apart from the weary-looking business plaque hung in the restaurant, the restaurant shows almost no signs of maturity. Currently, the restaurant is managed by the family’s third generation who strives to continue the legacy of their grandfather by serving delectable no-frills Nyonya cuisine to our local community at affordable prices.

Did we mention that if there’s one dish that you should never miss at Straits Chinese Nyonya Restaurant, it should be their Ayam Buah Keluak? Rich and unctuous, this dish of stewed chicken riddled with Indonesian black nut soaked in ambrosial mixed spices is irresistibly addictive! The taste of the keluak flesh with tender and flavourful minced meat is divine... We absolutely love how this brilliantly crafted piquant dish sings of tang, spice and bitterness all in a single bowl – it is a dish that will never go wrong and Straits Chinese’s forte is unquestionably in its classics!

Some of the other drool-inducing favourites at Straits Chinese Nyonya Restaurant are Sayur ldoeh and Udang Assam Pedas. What’s your favourite Nyonya dish? Let us know!
