Why is it named Parisilk?

Interestingly, Parisilk Electronics did not start out as an electronics business but was mostly into the business of selling mainly silk in Southern region of Singapore, along with other textiles. How the name Parisilk came about is not a mystery. It evolved from the company’s exact line of business that it started in 1952, shortly after the conclusion of World War 2, by the founder - Mr Gulabrai Primalani.
Scrolling Down the Timeline
Back in the early 1950s, with Singapore still being a British colony, NeeSoon in its hay-day was a popular hangout spot among the British Soldiers, a bustling hub for bars, nightclubs and arcaded rows of shops selling a bazillion of products. This makes it an attractive location for Parisilk to set up its first ever physical retail store there.

In 1974, Parisilk made the switch to selling consumer electronics goods instead of textiles as Mr Gulabrai Primalani’s three sons - Andrew (Chandru), Larry (Kumar) and Kevin (Prem) found that their father’s textile business in which they have taken over, has too little potential for expansion. Despite the stark switch over, they decided to keep its name ‘Parisilk’ as it has been long established and widely known among the locals.
Following, with the emergence of the Internet and Singaporean Government’s vision to turn the Lion City into a successful Information Technology hub, the market for the retail of computer products was growing at full tilt at around 1996. The three brothers chanced upon this golden opportunity and attempted for a slice of the IT retail pie.
At the moment, the Parisilk consumer electronics and computers business is being helmed by the third generation of the Primalani family.
